The First Fire and Police Services

More facts

This winter we have experienced a few rough storms that have caused wide spread power outages and fallen trees and limbs throughout the City.  In times such as these we depend on our service and safety departments to plow and salt our streets, remove trees out of the road, and assisting us in our time of need. This month for the “Did you Know” article we will look back to see when the police and fire services first began in Montgomery.

The first signs of a police force in Montgomery began in 1809 with three men being chosen as the Justices of the Peace.  Later in 1910 when Montgomery achieved village status a town Marshall was appointed.  Then in 1956 a full time police department was created and headed by Chief Richard Moore.

As for the Fire Department, the Montgomery Fire Company incorporated on October 14, 1929 and in June 1930 a firehouse building committee was formed and membership fees were established in 1931.  The first firehouse was built in 1930 on West Street (now Shelly Lane) and was rebuilt in 1950.   Throughout the years the fire department has grown and even changed locations, in 1992 city council voted to include emergency services with the fire department. Currently our Fire department has seven full time and thirty part time firefighters. In 1997 the Police and Fire departments moved their facilities together to the current safety center located at 10150 Montgomery Road.

Our safety and service workers are a vital part of our community please remember to take a minute out of your day and thank them for the great job that they do.
